Which inburgering route fits you?

Go Beyond DutchPublished Updated

Most people integrating in the Netherlands follow the B1 route: you learn Dutch to level B1 and take your inburgering exam at that level. If you want to go faster or higher, the Staatsexamen NT2 lets you show you have reached B1 or B2. Your municipality decides the route with you in your personal integration plan (PIP).

The three routes in short

  • B1 route — Dutch lessons up to B1, the most common route.
  • Education route — for younger newcomers heading into Dutch education.
  • Z-route — when B1 is not feasible; focused on self-sufficiency.

Staatsexamen NT2

The Staatsexamen NT2 (Programme I = B1, Programme II = B2) counts towards your inburgering and is often the better choice if you plan to study or work at level.
